Pre-op Transsexuals and Addiction
Transsexuality is a state of being where a person who was born with one gender identity feels that the existing identity is contrary to how he feels about himself. In other words, someone may be born male but feel his psychology codes female. It is believed that some of the variables that influence a person’s gender include the following:
- Genetic gender – the chromosomes you inherited at birth
- Physical gender – primary and secondary sexual characteristics
- Brain gender – the functional structure of the brain
- Gender identity – how we feel about whether we are male or female
How Addiction Affects Transsexuals
For a person who journeys through a transsexual situation, there are many struggles that the person has encountered including these problems:
- Confusion – when a person first senses that there is a transsexual awareness, there may be a great deal of confusion, especially if the person feels this way during her teen years when hormonal fluctuations are so extreme.
- Denial – often, an initial reaction to these feelings is denial. A person does not want to believe that he feels differently than what is considered normal, and may make several attempts to live happily within his current state.
- Anger – a common feeling during this process is anger. A person may be angry at herself, her higher power, even her parents because she needs to blame someone for her feelings.
- Rejection – a person who is not successful in accepting his feelings often feels rejected and alone.
Transsexuals and Addiction
If there was one formula for addiction, a person going through a transsexual experience probably has most of the variables including the following:
- Confusion
- Denial
- Anger
- Rejection
- Discrimination
- Isolation
In an effort to deal with all of these feelings, some people resort to drugs or alcohol to get a sense of peace and happiness. Unfortunately, self-medication is a short-term solution and often leads to abuse of drugs or alcohol. When coupled with an unstable personal environment, these people are quite susceptible to addiction.
